Falls at home: Understanding the risks and how to stay safe

Home is where we feel most comfortable, but it is also where most of the falls occur. As we age, changes in balance, strength, vision, and mobility can increase the risk of falling. The good news is that many falls can be prevented with simple changes around the home and by looking after our health.

What can cause falls?

Falls are often caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Reduced strength, balance, or mobility
  • Changes in vision or hearing
  • Certain medications that may cause dizziness or drowsiness
  • Poor lighting, especially at night
  • Loose rugs, clutter, or electrical cords
  • Slippery bathroom surfaces
  • Uneven pathways or steps

How can you reduce your risk?

A few small changes can make a big difference:

✔ Keep walkways clear and remove trip hazards
✔ Ensure your home is well lit
✔ Use non-slip mats and consider grab rails where needed
✔ Wear supportive, well-fitting shoes
✔ Keep frequently used items within easy reach
✔ Stay active with exercises that support strength and balance
✔ Have regular vision, hearing, and medication reviews

Stay connected with a personal alarm

Even with good prevention strategies, falls can still happen. A personal alarm can provide extra peace of mind by allowing you to quickly call for help if you experience a fall or medical emergency at home.

Personal alarms are especially helpful for people who live alone and want the confidence of knowing support is available when needed.

Small steps can make a big difference

Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. By creating a safer home environment, staying active, and accessing the right support, you can maintain your independence and continue feeling confident in your own home.
